B-Lines (B for biodiversity)
B-Lines are a network of 3km wide corridors that criss-cross the UK. They were created by Buglife and they draw attention to our need to help nature regenerate by concentrating our efforts to help nature flourish within the corridors. One of Surrey's B-Lines runs through the chalk hill north of Brockham, Betchworth and Buckland. Biodiversity loss |

The loss of wildflower habitats and the wildlife that depend on them, for example insect pollinators, is the biodiversity problem that B-Lines are trying to address. The power of the Biodiversity Line concept is that it can be used for all forms of plant and animal life, not just wild flowers and insect pollinators.
Betchworth B-Line The Betchworth B-Line, together with the Surrey Hills B-Line established by Buglife, are important structures for biodiversity enhancement in the 4Bs. In 2025 there have been significant additions to the B-Line. Firstly, the Betchworth Estate has sown a wildflower rich seed mix in a large strip 15m x 300m running along the edge of the field next to North Downs School in Betchworth (location C on B-Line map). With a total area of over 4000 sq m this is a huge addition to existing wildflower cultivations and makes an enormous contribution to the area of cultivated wildflowers and the continuity of wildflower patches and strips. The second significant contribution is made by the owners of Betchworth Station, who have sown wildflower and grass seed mixes over around 800 sq m in their rewilding project in the Old Station Goods Yard (point B in Figure). Aggregating all the recent contributions and known, established wildflower meadows, come to an astonishing, but conservative estimate of 8000 sq m of wildflower cultivation within the Betchworth B-Line.
The Betchworth Biodiversity Line provides a structure for concentrating biodiversity enhancement activities such as the cration of new habitats for wildlife. ![]()
