                                          Box Hill Wild Bird Survey
Picture
Following a talk in Box Hill vilage hall on the wild birds of the 4Bs,  members of the audience were invited to join a survey of wild birds in  the Box Hill area in June 2025 and this page outlines the strategy we will use.  Glenn Carmichael (RSPB Dorking) has kindly agreed to be advisor to the project.

The survey will aim to:
1 Identify all the species that inhabit the area – either through visual identification or by their sound using the Merlin bird ID App
2 Create a map showing the locations of sightings and sound recordings
3 Create an on-line slide show from photographs taken.

Methodology

1 Participants will be invited to join a Box Hill WhatsApp Nature Group. This will provide a means of sharing information about birds and other wildlife on a regular basis. Please downlad the app to your smart phone.  Participants who don’t have a smart phone or who don’t use whatsapp will  be contacted via email.

2 Beginning on June 1st, participants will make sightings or recordings of the birds in their gardens or anywhere else in the Box Hill area. The names of the birds that are identified, and any photographs taken, can be shared in the WhatsApp Nature Group, together with information about the location in which they were spotted or heard. A simple check list will be provided.

3 The Merlin bird ID App (see photo on right) can be used to identify birds using the camera or sound function.
We encourage 2min recordings using the sound identification function on the Merlin Whatsapp. During the recording birds are identified and at the end of the recording a screen shot can be taken and shared in the Whatsapp group together with the sound recording. In this way we can build both a visual map of bird species and a sound map.

In addition short (2min) sound recordings can be made using a camcorder or mobile phone and posted in the WhatsApp Group.

4 Any photographs taken of birds will be collated and displayed in a slideshow on this page.
