CURRENT PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY THE 4Bs BIODIVERSITY INITIATIVE

A Rectory Green Buckland, rejuvenation of wildflower meadow. In collaboration with the landowner - Buckland Estate, the intention is to develop a management plan to encourage the growth of wildflowers in an area of species rich grassland. An experimental strip, from which the thatch has been removed, is the first step in the plan and a botanical baseline survey will be undertaken in spring/summer 2025.

B North Downs School Betchworth wildlife habitats garden. Working with the teachers and pupils the intention is to develop a 30 x6m strip of the playing field into a series of habitats for wildlife. Pupils and teachers will participate in an Action Day for Nature in March 2025 and the site will be monitored for its wildlife during the year.

C Allotment wildlife patch Betchworth. Support is being given to rejuvinate an allotment which is already wildlife friendly.  A new pond, wildflower strip, bird feeders and seating area will be created where passers by will be invited to sit.

D Royal Oak Pub - community nature reserve Brockham. Support is being given to a group of volunteers who are trying to turn a rough patch of ground behind the pub, into a flourishing nature reserve.
E Elisabeth Bailey Pond rejuvination project Brockham   Support is being given to volunteers who are lining and replanting a small pond on the EB recreational field, and helping to rejuvinate the adjacent woodland to enhance biodiversity.

Brockham Citizen Science Wilding Project

In 2020 Sorbus Learning was employed by the Parish Council to help reach younger members of the community in its Youth Council as one way to encourage local people to engage with wildlife and make space for nature in Brockham. A citizen science experiment was established to test the effectiveness of different ways of creating wildflower verges and meadows by trying four methods and monitoring results.

Examples of Resident Initiatives

A place where the wild things are
This decade long project by two Brockham residents provides a living example of how people can design their garden for nature and humans.

"For a decade our garden has been a place for family and friends that we have happily shared with wildlife in all its forms. We have a large field maple tree, a variety of smaller native and exotic trees and shrubs, an ancient hedgerow, long grass areas, a wild flower meadow, a rocky gravel beach area and a pond. We have recorded a variety of native plants, which provide food and shelter for insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals that visit our garden to feed, drink and breed. In the past these habitats and wildlife coexisted happily with a family of four, a dog, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits and numerous human visitors of all ages. For people there are seated areas, a patio, a lawn path, a vegetable patch, a bothy and a workshop. In short, our garden is a place where wildlife and people can flourish."

Letting nature do what it needs to do
Many people join the no-mow May campaign, but what happens if we only cut the grass once a year in September? These movies document what happens when grasses and wildflowers are allowed to grow in garden.
