Origin of an idea The idea for a biodiversity initiative grew out of a Re-Betchworth project to create a B-(Biodiversiy) Line in Betchworth in 2023: a contribution to the UK-wide network of biodiversity corridors created by Buglife. With financial support from the Parish Council and Buglife, 70 residents cultivated over 2000 sq m of wildflowers to help insect pollinators flourish. The project demonstrated the power of residents in a community to help nature.
In the belief that nature is a great force for connecting people and building community, as demonstrated by the B-Line project, an application was made for a grant from the Transition Together Fund for a Biodiversity Initiative across the 4Bs - Betchworth, Buckland, Brockham and Box Hill. The people who live and work here, enjoy and benefit from this beautiful living landscape and the initiative provides an opportunity for those who live here to give something to ensure that this living landscape continues to flourish.
Grant Administration While the Re-Betchworth Charity is responsible for administering the grant and ensuring that it is spent in ways that are commensurate with the project plan. The 4Bs Biodiversity Initiative facilitation team is led by a member of Re-Betchworth Charity, but the team is working independently in the collective interest of the 4Bs. The teams plans, activities and outcomes are monitored by the Charity, but the team is responsible for how the grant is spent according to emerging needs and priorities.
Commitment & collaboration To achieve our vision will require sustained commitment and collaboration between the residents, communities and councils of the 4 B Parishes, and numerous organisations that have roles and responsibilities for the management and stewardship of this unique landscape. Discussion and action are being facilitated by a small team of volunteers
