The idea for a biodiversity initiative grew out of a Re-Betchworth project to create a B-(Biodiversiy) Line in Betchworth in 2023: a contribution to the UK-wide network of biodiversity corridors created by Buglife. With financial support from the Parish Council and Buglife, 70 residents cultivated over 2000 sq m of wildflowers to help insect pollinators flourish. The project demonstrated the power of residents in a community to help nature.
In the belief that nature is a great force for connecting people and building community, we successfuly bid for a £5000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, administered by Transition Together, for a Biodiversity Initiative across the 4Bs - Betchworth, Buckland, Brockham and Box Hill. The year long project came to an end in March 2025 but the initiative is being continued within Re-Betchworth's portfolio of work to mitigate the effects of climate change and create a greener, more bio-diverse and sustainable local environment. The initiative should be seen in the context of the transition movement through which communities come together to reimagine and rebuild our world. in order to achieve a more sustainable future.
