Bluebell & Wild Garlic Map

One of the ways we can appreciate nature is by understanding the distribution, abundance and diversity of plants and animals. Our first mapping project is to show the distribution of bluebells and wild garlic that are in flower during April and May in many woodlands within the 4B's area. The two species often grow in the same wood but hardly ever grow together. They form large clumps and out-compete one another. Wild garlic comes into leaf earlier than bluebell and so may have a competitive advantage. Bluebells need more light than wild garlic and so like the dappled light of a woodland before the tree canopy shades the ground. The presence of Bluebells and Wild Garlic is an indicator that the woodland has existed for a very long time. Our map of the distribution of bluebells and wild garlic seems to correlate with those areas that are designated as being ancient woodland.
We began with a map (top) of the known recordings of Bluebell and Wild Garlic produced by Simon Humphreys. We then spent time searching for new sites. We recorded a total of 27 additional sites for Bluebells and 14 additional sites for Wild garlic (bottom map).
